ChemCom® is a registered trademark of the American Chemical Society. It has 8 units (1-8) which are divided into sections (A-D or E). Each section has subsections (1- 9). A sequence of letters and digits can is being used to relate files to the text book. For example, a file called "Q3D.4: Polymers" is a quiz for Unit 3 (Petroleum); Section D (Making Useful Materials from Petroleum); subsection 4 (Petrochemicals). In order to create a system to organize and access files, the following convention is being used:
- Tests:
- Tests will be defined as an evaluation over one unit. Use a two letter code plus a title: For example, "T2: <title>", would indicate a test over unit 2. Tests need not cover all sections within a unit, but should cover more than one unit.
- Quizzes:
- Quizzes will be defined as an evaluation over a specific topic within one section. Use a three letter code. For example, Q3B Alkanes, would be a quiz over alkanes which is a topic in Unit 3, section B ; while Q1A Dimensional analysis, would be a quiz over dimensional analysis which is a topic in Unit 1, section A.
- Exams:
- Exams will be considered to be tests over more than one unit. Use a three character letter code such as E1-4, which would indicate an exam or test, over units 1 through 4.
If files are submitted with duplicate titles for the same unit, section, and sub-section, a number is appended to the titles to differentiate them. For example, "Q3.D1: Petroleum #1" vs. "Q3.D1: Petroleum #2", would indicate two different quizzes over Unit 3, section D, subsection 1.
Currently files are stored in HTML format. If there is enough interest I may pursue Adobe Acrobat's PDF format. It will help if you already have the file formatted for HTML, but if you do not know how to do this just submit it as a text file. After uploading a file please notify me so that it can be processed and added to the database.
